Does your website give enough information
for customers to contact you or to purchase your product or service?
Always provide contact information, complete with mailing address, telephone number, and an email address that goes somewhere other than the black hole of the 'webmaster' mailbox.
Even if you are a sole proprietor, and the only one your client will contact, you can still create separate mailboxes on most web hosting services so that you can easily receive and sort through email about sales, general information or technical problems on your site.
And, in most cases, you can have these email forwarded to another email address if you do not check your website mailbox often.
You should provide contact information links on every page of your website, so that your customer doesn't have to dig around.
When your customer is ready to buy a product or service, can they buy it online and pay you through credit card, PayPal or other online payment service? Don't make your customers send you an email to buy a product.
They want to find the product, pay for it and get shipping pricing and purchase confirmation in one transaction. Don't make them print an order form and send you a check. This discourages customers from making the purchase.
If your customer WANTS to send you a check, give them an option to order and hold the item with a confirmation of purchase, pending the receipt and clearance of their check.
If you accept credit cards, be sure you provide plenty of reassurance that your site is secure and that your customer's private information is protected.
If you provide an online FAQ (frequently asked questions), your customer may be able to find answers to his questions, and complete his purchase without having to contact you.
