5. Site Component Design

Another common mistake made by web designers and business owners is the use of frames and FLASH programming.

Using frames is a nice way to segment data and content and make it easy to read, but many search engines do not read content that is inside a frame.

So, you can have many great keyword references in your content and still be missing that all-important search engine ranking.

For those search engines that DO read content in frames, you may still find it difficult to achieve good ranking.

That is because the frames increase the page file size and total words (even though a frame is NOT a word) and thereby dilute the keyword density.
Unless your company is very large, and your website is very complex with lots of opportunity for other keyword use, do not use frames.

If you MUST use frames, use the <NOFRAMES> tag to point the search engine to your web page, by composing your entire web page within the brackets of the <NOFRAMES> tag.

It would look something like this:

<FRAMESET COLS=" 125,*" border=" 0"> <NOFRAMES>
<BODY>
<H1> Be sure to start the content inside the NOFRAMES tag with a keyword header tag to attract the search engine</ H1>
<P> Place all your content using HTML, and use a link to another page on your site so the search engine can find that reference too:</ P>
<A HREF=" http:// www. governorsteeshirt. com/ otherpage. htm"> Click to link to another page</ A>

By including a link to other pages, you leverage the reference the search engine will find and return to the customer.

Your client (and the search engine spider) can find your site and the linked pages more easily.

You don't need to worry too much about graphics, colors or other design concepts, although your site should be attractive.

Don't clutter your site with TOO MUCH content and information or with a lot of flashing, animated STUFF.  It is confusing and annoying.

If you do have graphics or product pictures on your site, use the opportunity to name these pictures with keyword titles and captions, so that you can make them search engine friendly.

DO NOT bother using FLASH on your site.  It is not search engine friendly.

If your website is an entertainment site or another site that must present some glitz or flashy animation to grab visitor attention, use it only as the lead-in and allow your visitors to skip the animation and FLASH presentation by selecting a 'skip this' link in the top right hand corner of the page.
